In a turn of events as unexpected as his return to top-flight football, Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny has admitted he's yet to make a decision about his long-term future at FC Barcelona. While many expected the experienced shot-stopper to hang up his gloves for good after leaving Juventus, Szczęsny shocked the football world by returning to action – and now, he might be staying even longer.

But there's a twist: his final decision? It’s not his alone to make.

From Retirement to Revival

Szczęsny, 35, had originally announced his retirement from professional football in August 2024, ending a successful career that saw him play for clubs like Arsenal, Roma, and Juventus. But football wasn't done with him yet. When Barcelona’s first-choice keeper Marc-André ter Stegen suffered a long-term injury, the club found themselves in desperate need of an experienced, calm presence between the sticks.

 Robert Lewandowski.

According to reports, the Polish striker personally reached out to his compatriot, convincing him to join the Blaugrana for a short-term stint. Szczęsny signed, stepped in, and immediately provided stability and leadership during a turbulent period for the Catalan giants.

Barcelona Wants More – But Szczęsny Isn't Rushing

Since his return, Szczęsny has impressed fans, players, and staff alike. His calm demeanor, leadership qualities, and professionalism have been crucial in stabilizing the team defensively. It’s no surprise then that Barcelona, now under the leadership of Hansi Flick, wants to keep him. The club has reportedly offered Szczęsny a contract extension that runs until June 2027.

But Szczęsny has asked for time. He’s not rushing into anything—and his reasoning is deeply personal.

"Most Decisions Are Made By My Wife"

In a candid interview with AS, Szczęsny openly admitted that his future isn't a solo decision:

“I owe it to my wife to decide this together, and we haven't done that yet. Most decisions are made by my wife, and I'm not ashamed of it at all.”

The statement, honest and humble, has earned praise online for showing how grounded and balanced Szczęsny remains. It also highlights the reality many footballers face: while fans see the 90 minutes on the pitch, behind the scenes, personal sacrifices and family decisions play a massive role.

Trusted Figure in the Dressing Room

Even if Szczęsny’s time at Camp Nou remains short-lived, his impact is undeniable. Reports say he’s become a mentor to younger players and a respected voice in the dressing room. Sporting Director Deco and coach Hansi Flick are both believed to be strongly in favor of retaining him, seeing him as a key figure in the team’s rebuilding phase.

As of now, there is no confirmed answer. Szczęsny says his focus is on finishing the season strong and helping Barcelona in whatever way he can. The decision on whether he continues will come soon – and will likely be made around the kitchen table with his wife.

Whether he stays or chooses to step away once again, one thing is clear: Wojciech Szczęsny has already made his mark at Barcelona.
